More irrigators groups in CAR gear up for Gulayamanan sa PatubiganWednesday, August 27, 2025 - 07:01 More and more Irrigators’ Associations (IA) in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) are signing up for the ‘Gulayamanan sa Patubigan’, a convergence program of the NIA and the IAs to utilize auxiliary spaces and canal embankments of communal and national irrigation systems for cultivating various types of vegetables. The NIA’s Gulayamanan sa Patubigan/Canal program is a government’s initiative to encourage community gardening among IAs and promote sustainable agriculture and supplement farmers’ income as vegetables may be sold through the KADIWA sa NIA and other market linkages. Crops planted along canal banks, aside from additional food source, also help in managing weeds and encourage farmers to visit and maintain irrigation systems. This results in better canal upkeep while also providing fresh food and possible additional income for farm families. As of August 20, 2025, there are 32 Irrigators Associations (IA) that have already cultivated canal embankments for vegetables and root crops, with some IAs already harvested and sold their produce in Kadiwa sa NIA. NIA and the IAs have also started coordinating with the municipal and provincial agriculture office for the provision of seedlings to be planted at the ‘gulayamanan sa patubigan’, tools and small group orientations on vegetable gardening.
